Aikido – A Universal Martial Art
Aikido is a true Martial Art or Budo. Like the ocean, there is much hidden beneath the surface of the martial art of Aikido.
When studying the Aikido way, the student is developed on three levels, namely body, mind and spirit. It is this characteristic which makes Aikido “all things to all people” and the perfect method for personal transformation.
For students who have a serious interest in combat martial arts and self-defense, Aikido is immensely powerful and perfectly refined. These students will have their needs completely met when training in an Aikido Dojo:
1. Hard physical training ensures fitness, flexibility, agility and strength.
2. The student learns the fundamentals of movement, timing and breathing. Martial Arts Techniques are practiced continually by repetition until the body of the student “remembers” and executes each movement faultlessly.
3. In addition to learning the technical aspects of Aikido, the student is taught the science of tactics. This is of great value during combat and when the student finds him or herself in a self-defense situation.
For those students more interested in the Mind and Spirit aspects of this Martial Art, Aikido offers a wealth of wisdom
- both philosophically and spiritually. O-Sensei, Morihei Ueshiba, sought to achieve peace in the world and spent much time studying and meditating on this subject. He believed that the philosophy of Aikido could be a tool to assist mankind in attaining a state of peace. He saw the martial art of Aikido as an instrument to initially overcome the discord within ourselves and then ultimately, the discord which exits in the world.
O-Sensei taught that the true Budo of Aikido involves purifying the heart and mind in order to receive the universal energy or “hara”. “Hara” is the manifestation of those inner qualities that will assist the student on his or her path to spiritual enlightenment.
One of reasons why Aikido holds great appeal world wide, is that the nature of Aikido makes it accessible to all people. Women, men, children and the elderly are practicing this Martial Art regularly on a world-wide basis today and reaping the benefits.
Irrespective of what the need of the student may be and regardless of who the student may be, Aikido has the potential to deliver.
