How Effective Are Self Defense Classes?

Every human being on this planet has the right to self defense when attacked. Yet, how often are people attending training .

The truth is that these critics of martial arts self defense are uninformed and way off the mark. Self defense comprises of techniques aimed at preventing, resisting and ending a physical attack. Anyone can learn these techniques irrespective of physical ability, gender or age.

Although it is true that training class can only be as good as the instructor who teaches it, most reputable Martial Arts schools teach self defense, either as part of their curriculum or otherwise as separate, focused classes. Such instruction is nearly always undertaken by a qualified and experienced Martial Arts instructor. The qualifications of the instructor can be verified with minimal effort. Accepting instruction from an unqualified, pseudo-instructor is not an option to most of us.

Successful martial arts self defense stories are abundant and widely published.

Recently, a 70-year old British pensioner who received self defense training in the Military was attacked by no less than four muggers of between the ages of 18 and 25. He managed to effectively neutralize the attack by tapping on the skills he was taught all those years ago. Two of the four assailants were injured whereas the pensioner came away with only a few scratches.

There is also the story of a frail 75-year old female pensioner in Romania who was attacked by a 30 year old man in her bed. By using martial arts self defense techniques she previously studied, she managed to free herself from his grasp and move herself into a less vulnerable position. She then used her knee to kick him in the groin. When he bent over, she hit him over the head. The assailant was arrested on attempted rape and house breaking charges and according to police in a sorry state indeed.

As we have seen in the two incidents above, one cannot always rely on someone else to step in and help. The fact is that, more often than not, people are attacked when alone. Self defense may well be the only available option when having to deal with a threatening situation. If these two elderly people were not trained in martial arts self defense, the outcomes of their respective situations would in all probability have been very different.

So, in response to the question as to whether self defense classes could be effective, an assertive and resounding YES, most definitely is the answer.
