The term “Shotokan Karate” literally means “the house of pine waves.” It is a style of Karate developed by Gichin Funakoshi who officially brought karate from Okinawa to the mainland Japan. The word “Shoto” was the pen name that Gichin used in his poetry writings, which means “pine waves”. “Kan” means “house”. Hence “shotokan” was thee name of the hall where he trained his students.
