Weapons of Self Defense &
Martial Arts...
In Martial Arts, an extensive array of weapons was traditionally used for self defense purposes. These included swords, poles, bows and arrows, clubs, sickles, daggers and knives. Unfortunately, given our lifestyles and circumstances as it stands today, these revered weapons of self defense have very little practical value to us when suddenly faced with a threatening situation.
For starters, using a martial arts weapon requires you to have it available within moments of needing it. Although there are times when an attack can be foreseen, in the majority of cases your defense skills will be called upon without warning and totally unexpectedly. In the second place, there is absolutely no time to fumble for a weapon whilst under attack. The searching will not be overlooked by the attacker. He will simply become more vigilant, thus robbing you of that critical component of martial arts self defense, namely the element of surprise. Finally, by openly wielding a martial arts weapon, you may intensify the attack and make it more difficult to neutralize the situation.
Admittedly a weapon can be of tremendous assistance in martial arts self defense when one is faced with a large and strong opponent. Fortunately we are surrounded by highly useful, non-obvious weapons most of the time. For example, a bedside lamp can double beautifully as a club. A carrier bag loaded with at a brick or rock, becomes nearly as powerful as a mace in self defense.
Your car key can be used for stabbing and your walking stick will work just as well as any staff. By using less obvious items such as these for self defense purposes instead of traditional martial arts weapons, you will be able to respond to the situation immediately. Importantly, it will also preserve the much needed self defense element of surprise.
Simply by being aware that there are everyday items that can be used for self defense is not sufficient by itself. Swinging the bedside lamp about, in the hope of hitting the assailant, will not necessarily work either. Just like Martial Arts students undergo training to learn the art of weaponry, students undergoing self defense training too need to learn how to wield the weapon timely, effectively and capably.
Fortunately most reputable martial arts classes pay close attention to the identification and use of martial arts self defense weapons. It provides you with an edge over an assailant if you are mentally prepared for a variety of situations and if you know in advance what could make a decent weapon under those circumstances. If you are attending self defense classes already, do request additional training on these ‘weapons’. If you are not attending self defense training, I strongly recommend that you do. Be safe.
